Tech Spotlight: Michael Haynes, Journeyman

What’s one of the most interesting projects you’ve worked on?

Of the projects I’ve been involved with while at Atlantic Westchester, one of the most interesting projects was a VRF installation complete with make-up air units, all linked to 3rd-party central control. The different types of equipment each had unique modes of control and required collaboration with the manufacturer’s rep and the BMS programmer to find a way to get each piece of the puzzle to work together and provide a functional system for the customer. With several different systems communicating as one, every step required teamwork and problem-solving. There were challenges along the way, but seeing it all come together into a fully functional system for the customer made it incredibly rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone new in the HVAC industry?

At times, it can be overwhelming to jump into troubleshooting equipment, especially when it is not something you’re already familiar with. I would suggest taking a moment to simplify the situation and consider the sequence of operations that must be completed before the item you’re troubleshooting can function. Once you have an understanding of what should be happening, start at the beginning and confirm each step until the problem is found.
